In June 2002, a group of young people were presented with certificates of achievement for their part in Kent Youth's 3rd successful Peer Drugs project. Run in partnership with Medway Youth service, the project educates young people about drugs awareness, so that they can pass the message on to their peers. Peer Education relies on the positive influence that young people have with their peers and passes on the facts, not myths about issues relevant to young people. Each of the young people in the group gave up free time to volunteer with the project, meeting once a week to undertake training and plan sessions that they then delivered in schools across Medway in Kent. Among the group were four young people who have achieved a BTEC qualification in Peer Education, including the first young man in Kent to gain the award.
Kent Youth recently held a celebration of volunteering at Pizza Express in Bluewater to thank the many volunteers who give their time to supporting Kent Youth's work with young people and youth groups across the county. The event was a great success and was enjoyed by everyone. Especially popular was the excellent food and drink provided free of charge by Pizza Express as part of their commitment to local communities.
In May 2002, 22 young people took part in a 50 mile canoeing marathon as part of Kent Youth's challenging activities and personal development programme. The young people aged 12-19 made a commitment to attending regular weekend training sessions, building their confidence and skills before taking part in the marathon. From this group, 8 young people progressed to participating in a 100 mile marathon over the Jubilee holiday weekend. As well as increasing their canoeing skills, the young people increased their confidence, team skills, communication and stamina.
